Park Life, Newsletter from the People and Parks Foundation
December 2008

Dear supporter

Welcome to the first edition of the People and Parks quarterly newsletter.

It has been a terrific year for People and Parks, with an outstanding increase in community support and engagement.

We have many exciting projects planned for 2009, so be sure to stay in touch to find our what's happening in your local parks.

People and Parks would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and encourages you to spend time in parks this summer with your family and friends.

Let's bring life to our parks, and parks to our life.

Kind Regards,

People and Parks

Caitlin's Retreat development report

Caitlin's Retreat development report

Development is well underway at Caitlin’s Retreat; our unique, nature based sanctuary for young people living with chronic illness or disability and their families.

Since site manager, Andrew King, moved on site with his young family, Caitlin’s Retreat has been a constant hub of activity, and the generosity shown by the greater community in support of this new project has been welcomed immensely.

Capital Glass and Holmesglen TAFE has assisted us greatly with the development of Caitlin's Retreat, ensuring that we are creating a safe and hazard free environment for families to enjoy.

ExxonMobil Day of Caring

ExxonMobil Day of Caring

ExxonMobil, who are our great partners with our Sea Search program, took the 15th of October off from normal duties, and got their hands dirty volunteering for two of our projects during their annual Day of Caring. With one team stationed at our Eltham retreat centre, and another at Jawbone Marine Sanctuary; a great day was had by all.

KEEN to Finish for Charity

KEEN to Finish for Charity

“The idea was simple enough… Get a Policeman, a Fire Fighter and a Paramedic together to race in the premier Australian five-day adventure race to help raise some money so sick kids stuck in the Royal Children’s Hospital can enjoy some time in the outdoors with full medical support.”

And that is exactly what happened when KEEN developed a charity team concept and sponsored, Tim Hart (Victoria Police), David Gorman (CFA) and Jack Garnett (Rural Ambulance Victoria) to create team “KEEN to Finish for Charity” to compete in the five day KEEN Alps to the Ocean Adventure Race, whilst raising money for People and Parks’ WILD program.

And Also...

Come and get your feet wet!

Within the intertidal rocky shores or the lush seagrass beds, lies a myriad of ecosystems that are often unnoticed by beach goers. It is not until you get up close and personal to these very special environments that you realise the mass of life that lies beneath the surface.

Sea Search is a People and Parks program that allows you to explore and learn about the diversity of marine plants and animals found in Victoria’s Marine Protected Areas.

Mother's Choice World's Greatest Pram Stroll

Thousands of families turned out in parks in Victoria, QLD, SA and NSW for this year’s Mother’s Choice World’s Greatest Pram stroll.

From Berwick to Bacchus Marsh and Albert Park in between, families came out to support the annual event which is part of our FEEL BLUE, TOUCH GREEN initiative that raises awareness amongst new families of the importance of connecting with communities and introducing their children to nature in parks for their health and wellbeing.
